All About Lisheen Castle

Lisheen Castle has been a major tourist attraction in County Tipperary for some time now
and visitors flock there every year, but the majority of them are interested in its
paranormal goings on. Building began in 1827 but it was not completed until 1840, so the
ghosts are not that old, but boy are they mad!

There are conflicting stories about who built it though. Some say it was William Fibbs,
others say it was a man by the name of Charles Lloyd. Both were local landlords that were
anything but kind to the people living in the area. The local townsfolk hated the local
landlords because they were tyrants. They charged extortionate rents, evictions were
common and families died because they were so impoverished. William Fibbs got the
worst of it though. This was undoubtedly why he and Lisheen Castle were cursed.

It all began with the curse. A local widow cursed Lisheen Castle, condemning the families
to wander around Lisheen Castle haunted ruins for eternity, and they do to this day.

Ghostly Happenings

Lisheen Castle haunted ruins are acknowledged as the most haunted place in Ireland
today. The ruins are full of rats nest, which according to Irish folklore contain fairies.
Fairies are high elemental and offer up proof that restless spirits still reside in the ruins.
More disturbing and chilling still, Linsheen Castle was the home of mummies and various
artefacts in its heyday and there are rumours that the mummies wander round the ruins to
this day. Moaning can often be heard coming from the basement levels.

The mummies are not the only ones haunting Lisheen Castle haunted ruins though.
Wooden floorboards creak as footsteps can be heard throughout the ruins, although the
Irish castle never had wooden floorboards. This can be heard all over Lisheen Castle,
from the ruins to the rebuilt home that is open to the public and available to rent out all
year round.

The Debtors Prison

The strongest evidence of ghostly presence comes from the area of the Lisheen Castle
haunted ruins that played host to the debtor’s prison. This was where people that owed
the landlord money were thrown to rot, or until their families could pay the extortionate rent
they owed.

Many a townsperson was thrown into the jail and many of them became bitter because
they had done nothing wrong. As such, they roam around the ruins trying to communicate
with the living because their lost souls are stuck in limbo.

Modern Hauntings

The Lisheen Castle haunted ruins also have more modern ghosts hanging around as well.
The entire castle was burned down on June 29th, 1921 as a result of the IRA’s war against
the British. They thought that the castle would be used as a base for the British armies
that may be used to quell their movement. The castle was believed to be empty and it has
never been proven otherwise, but there are rumours that some were killed in the fire and
wander with the 19th Century ghosts.

No matter where you go in Lisheen Castle haunted ruins, you will feel some sort of
presence and many people cannot handle the overwhelming sense that the ghosts bring.
However, if you are curious then check it out. You may just be touched by a ghost!
